Rebuilding the G4OBK Station

Moving on..... 16th October 2026

Earlier this year my XYL and I moved seven miles west of Pickering to a hamlet near Kirkbymoorside. Due to house moves around England and Scotland this will be my 9th station rebuild and 8th DIY tower/mast installation since 1982, when I first became licenced. I've installed one Altron, three HD Versatower and four Tennamast installations between 1987 and 2026.

So the spade and pick have now come out and I've started digging the hole for my 7.6m free standing lightweight Tennamast, which will be used for supporting VHF/UHF antennas. In a few months I will be digging another hole for my HF/50 MHz antenna mast, which is the 10.7m high, standard Tennamast.

The smaller 7.6m mast needs to have a square 1m X 500 mm deep hole filled with concrete to support it. I'm over half day down with the dig which took me around 2.5 hours so far on the spade. The spoil has to barrowed out to a skip on my drive that will soon need taking away as it's getting full from various jobs my XYL and I have doing in the garden over recent months....

On the same day as I started this dig for the first mast, Bob the builder arrived and constructed the floor and part of the frame for my fully insulated shack inside my garage. A new consumer unit will be fitted next week and the 1st fit wiring will be put in for the shack power points and light and fan unit. The shack internal measurements are 3M X 2M, considerably larger than my previous shack. The previous day I installed a ducted CAT6 underground feed to provide a permanent connection to the internet. A security system was installed a few months ago by GMC of Malton.
